These are installed fence prices per foot for the fences we build around Boerne, Texas, with the math worked out for common lengths. Your own number depends on your ground and your gates, and you'll get it in writing after we come out.
Fence Prices per Foot, Side by Side
Here's the fence cost per foot for each type, installed around Boerne. Most homes in this part of Texas land between $12 and $75 per foot. Chain link is the least expensive way to close in a yard, and wrought iron costs the most.
| Fence type | Installed price | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Wood privacy fence, 6 ft, pine or cedar | $25 to $45 per foot | Backyard privacy |
| Board-on-board, 8 ft or premium cedar | $35 to $60 per foot | Full privacy, finished both sides |
| Wrought iron or ornamental steel | $40 to $75 per foot | Front yards, estates, pools |
| Chain link, 4 ft galvanized to 6 ft black-coated | $12 to $30 per foot | Dog runs, budget yards, utility |
| Pipe fence, top rail with wire or pipe and cable | $20 to $45 per foot | Cattle, horses, acreage |
| Deer fence, yard and garden runs to 8 ft acreage | $8 to $20 per foot | Keeping deer out, game fence |
Gates, tear-out and staining are priced on their own:
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Walk gate | $150 to $400 |
| Double drive gate | $400 to $1,200 |
| Automatic driveway gate, installed complete | $3,000 to $12,000 |
| Adding an opener to an existing gate | $1,000 to $5,000 |
| Tearing out and hauling off an old fence | $3 to $6 per foot |
| Fence staining, 6 ft fence, one side | $3 to $8 per foot |
What Does 100 ft or 200 ft of Fence Cost?
For a 6 ft wood privacy fence, multiply your footage by $25 to $45 per foot:
- 100 ft: $2,500 to $4,500
- 150 ft: $3,750 to $6,750
- 200 ft: $5,000 to $9,000
If there's an old fence to tear out and haul off, add $3 to $6 per foot. On a 150 ft replacement, that's about $450 to $900 more.

How to measure your fence line
Run a measuring wheel along where the fence will go, or use the measuring tool in Google Earth Pro for a quick number from your computer.
Write down each straight run separately. The short runs that tie the fence into the side of the house add up. Mark where the gates go too, since gates are priced on their own. A rough number is fine for budgeting. We'll measure it ourselves when we come out.
Same Footage, Different Fences
On the same 150 ft yard, the total runs from about $1,200 for deer wire to $11,250 for wrought iron. Here's how 150 ft compares across fence types, before gates and tear-out:
| Fence type | 150 ft installed |
|---|---|
| Deer fence | $1,200 to $3,000 |
| Chain link | $1,800 to $4,500 |
| Pipe fence | $3,000 to $6,750 |
| 6 ft wood privacy | $3,750 to $6,750 |
| Board-on-board, 8 ft or premium cedar | $5,250 to $9,000 |
| Wrought iron or ornamental steel | $6,000 to $11,250 |
What Can Raise or Lower Your Price?
Five things decide whether your job lands at the low or high end:
- Rock. Post holes that hit Edwards Plateau limestone need heavy drilling. On the stony uplands around Boerne, that's more often the rule than the exception.
- Slope. Fences that step or rack down a hill take more fitting and more material.
- Height. An 8 ft fence uses taller posts and more boards than a 6 ft one.
- Gates. Each walk or drive gate adds to the total, and automatic gates add a significant cost.
- Tear-out. Removing and hauling off an old fence runs $3 to $6 per foot. We haul the old fence away.

A flat lot with soft soil, no gates and nothing to tear out lands near the bottom of the range. A rocky slope with several gates and an old fence to haul off lands near the top.
Acreage Changes the Math
A square 10-acre tract has about 2,640 feet of perimeter. At $20 to $45 per foot for pipe fence, that's roughly $52,800 to $118,800. Game or wire fence at $8 to $20 per foot runs about $21,120 to $52,800. Both are before ranch gates.

What About Repairs?
Most fence repairs run $300 to $900, a lot less than a new fence. Around Boerne, a lot of it comes after spring storms, or from old wood posts that rot at the ground line. Here's how repair prices usually break down:
- One post: $250 to $500
- A fallen section: $300 to $1,500
- Most other repairs: $300 to $900
Most of the cost of replacing a post is the work of digging out the old concrete, not the new materials. The fence repair cost guide has the full breakdown.
Permits Aren’t in These Prices
Permit fees aren't in these prices. Inside Boerne city limits, the city requires a permit application and a site plan before work starts. Fair Oaks Ranch runs its own permits, and many neighborhoods have HOA rules on top of that. Our guide to fence permits in Boerne and Fair Oaks Ranch walks through both.
Which Fence Gives the Most for the Money?
The best value depends on what the fence has to do. Price per foot is only part of it.
- For privacy: A 6 ft wood privacy fence at $25 to $45 per foot blocks the view. Chain link with privacy slats costs less, but it only screens part of it.
- For looks and views: Wrought iron at $40 to $75 per foot is the top choice. Black vinyl-coated chain link or a pipe fence keeps the view open for much less.
- For pets: Chain link at $12 to $30 per foot is hard to beat. If you have a big dog that jumps on the fence, heavier wire holds its shape better.
- For livestock: A welded pipe fence at $20 to $45 per foot is strong and needs little upkeep.
- For deer: A tall wire fence at $8 to $20 per foot works on a garden or a whole property.
Upkeep changes the long-term cost
A fence that's cheap to build isn't always cheap to own. Wood needs restaining every few years in Hill Country sun, at $3 to $8 per foot per side. Wrought iron needs repainting when the finish wears. Chain link and pipe need very little. If you plan to stay a long time, add up ten years of upkeep, not just the build.
Mixing fence types on one property
Using two or three fence types on one property is a good way to stretch a budget: iron across the front where it shows, wood privacy around the back yard, chain link for a dog run, and wire fence across the back acreage. Pricing each stretch at its own per-foot range usually comes out better than running one expensive fence around everything.
