Sagging Ranch Fence Around Comfort? Here Is Why

Ranch corners that will not hold in shallow, stony clay

The problem: A long wire run around the pasture goes slack, the corner posts lean in, and the braces pull loose.

Why it happens here: The uplands are thin, stony clay over hard limestone. A corner dug by hand never reaches solid footing.

What we do: We rebuild the corners and braces first, drilled into the limestone and set in concrete, then restretch the wire or replace it with pipe and ranch fencing sized for your stock.

No City Permit Office, but Still Worth a Check

A town that never became a city. Say you're putting a fence around a lot in town and you go looking for the city permit office. There isn't one. Unlike Boerne, Comfort has never incorporated. From the start, the people who settled it ran the town along cooperative lines and opposed formal local government, and volunteer groups and clubs have filled the gap ever since.

So the City of Boerne's permit and site plan rules don't reach Comfort, and there's no Comfort city hall to call the way there is in Boerne. Your land falls under unincorporated Kendall County, whose own permit list covers access, addressing, development, floodplain, septic and outdoor lighting. We check what applies to your property, and any deed restrictions, before we build.

Fence posts on a clay creek terrace below a stony upland near Comfort

Two Kinds of Ground, Two Ways to Set a Post

Around town you'll find stony uplands with limestone close to the surface, and lower creek terraces with deeper loamy clay. They need different handling. On the rock we drill and set posts in concrete. In the clay, depth and concrete matter even more, because clay swells and shrinks with moisture and will push a shallow post out of line.

On ranch land, the corners and braces carry the whole fence. We set them solid first, then stretch the wire, so the wire has something solid to pull against.

Fencing Comfort's Historic Lots and Big Ranches

Comfort sits on Cypress Creek, where it joins the Guadalupe River, at the I-10 and US 87 interchange. The old downtown is a historic district of more than 100 buildings from the 1850s to the 1950s, many in limestone and German timber framing. On those in-town lots, a fence should suit the street: picket, iron or a low wood fence.

The goats at the top of the page. Those Angora goats aren't there by chance. When the Hill Country was a center of the wool and mohair trade, a Comfort man was known as the "Angora Goat King of the World." Say you're fencing a pasture for goats today. Goats look for any gap and will squeeze through wire that holds a cow, so a goat pasture needs tighter wire set close to the ground. Cattle and horse pasture is different again, and outside town, off I-10 and US 87, it's large ranches, which means pipe, wire and deer fence over long runs. Deer come into town too, so a garden or orchard on an in-town lot often needs deer fence of its own.

The ground even shares the town's name. The Comfort soil series, first described in Kendall County, is 10 to 20 inches of very stony clay over hard limestone. Posts can't go deep in it by digging alone, so we drill the corners and braces into the limestone and set them in concrete.

Comfort Fence Questions

Does Boerne's fence permit apply in Comfort?

No. The town is unincorporated, so City of Boerne permit rules don't apply. We check county rules and any deed restrictions before building.

What does pipe fence cost for a ranch off I-10?

Pipe fence runs $20 to $45 per foot installed, for top rail with wire or pipe and cable. Height, rails, wire type, rock and slope set where a job lands.

Why do my corner posts keep leaning?

The uplands here are mostly 10 to 20 inches of very stony clay over hard limestone. A corner that isn't drilled into the rock has little to hold it, so we drill, set in concrete and brace before restretching the wire.

What does deer fence around an in-town garden or orchard cost?

Deer fence runs $8 to $20 per foot. A garden or orchard run on a town lot usually sits lower in that range than 8 ft fence across acreage.

Can you build a fence on a lot in the historic downtown?

Yes. We build picket-style wood, iron and chain link on in-town lots, and with more than 100 old buildings downtown, we help you pick a style that suits the street.
