A leaning post or a fallen section usually comes with one question: what's this going to cost? Here's the fence repair cost in Texas for the common jobs, based on what they run around Boerne, plus what goes into each repair and what you can do before we get there. These are the same prices on our fence repair page.

Fence Repair Prices at a Glance

Most repairs run $300 to $900. Where a job lands depends on rock, how easy it is to get to the fence, and how many posts are involved. The table shows the typical fence post replacement cost and what a fallen section runs.

RepairPrice
Fence repair, most jobs$300 to $900
One post$250 to $500
A fallen section$300 to $1,500
Walk gate (replacement)$150 to $400

The $300 to $900 range usually covers a couple of leaning posts, a handful of rotten pickets, a broken 2x4 rail, or a gate that drags.

What Each Repair Includes

Here's what each kind of repair involves. We fix what caused the problem, not just what you can see.

Replacing a post: $250 to $500

A leaning or broken post comes out along with its old footing. We dig a new hole deep enough to hold, set the new post in fresh concrete, and reattach the rails. Where the hole hits limestone, we drill into the rock instead of stopping short. If you'd like, we can replace a rotted wood post with a steel one so it doesn't rot at the ground line again.

Rebuilding a fallen section: $300 to $1,500

When wind or a falling limb takes out a whole section, it usually needs new posts, rails and pickets. The fence section repair cost depends on how many posts are involved, whether there's rock, and what wood you want. Cedar holds up better to rot. Pine costs less but moves more in Texas heat. We match the new boards to your fence's size and style.

Pickets and rails

Swapping a few rotten pickets or a broken 2x4 rail usually lands at the low end of the $300 to $900 range, as long as the rot hasn't reached the posts. New boards look brighter than the old ones at first. Staining evens them out.

Gates

A sagging gate usually means a loose hinge post or a frame that has pulled out of square. Often we can fix it by resetting the hinge post and squaring the frame with a diagonal brace. If the gate is too far gone, a new walk gate runs $150 to $400. Heavier hinges and a self-closer add a little. Big drive gates and openers are on our driveway gates page.

Wrought iron welds

Iron fences tend to crack at the welds or rust where the finish has worn off. We grind off the rust, re-weld the joint, then prime and paint it so the bare steel doesn't start rusting again.

What Affects the Cost of a Repair?

Four things decide most of the price:

  • Rock. Replacing a post in limestone means drilling, which takes longer than digging.
  • Access. Tight side yards, steep slopes and thick landscaping slow down carrying materials in.
  • Matching. An unusual board size or trim can take longer to find.
  • Iron work. Welding and repainting take more time than wood repairs.

Around Boerne, rock is the biggest of the four. On the uplands, the soil is thin and stony over limestone, so a lot of post holes need drilling.

A Few Real-World Examples

Here are a few common situations and where they usually land:

  • One leaning post on a 6 ft privacy fence after a windy week: $250 to $500.
  • Three leaning posts and a dozen rotted pickets along one side: usually $300 to $900.
  • An 8 ft section flattened by a limb, with new posts, rails and pickets: $300 to $1,500 depending on rock and materials.
  • A dragging walk gate that needs a new hinge post: within the most-jobs range. A whole new gate is $150 to $400.

When Repair Stops Making Sense

If rot has reached most of the posts, patching one spot at a time stops making sense. Compare the repair estimate with the cost to replace a fence in Texas. A 6 ft wood privacy fence runs $25 to $45 per foot installed, plus $3 to $6 per foot to tear out and haul off the old one. Our guide on whether to repair or replace walks through how to decide.

What You Can Do Before We Arrive

A few simple steps after a storm keep the damage from getting worse and make the repair go faster.

  • Take photos of the damage from a few angles. They help with the estimate and with any insurance claim you decide to make.
  • Clear what is safe to clear. Move small debris off the fence. Leave heavy limbs for someone with the right gear.
  • Secure pets. A downed section is an open door for dogs.
  • Prop, do not pull. If a section is leaning, prop it so it does not fall further. Pulling it upright can crack posts and rails that are still good.
  • Mark your sprinklers. Flag the irrigation heads near the fence so nobody hits them when new post holes go in.

Why cheap repairs sometimes cost more

A leaning post can be pushed back and braced with a T-post or a stake in a few minutes. It usually doesn't last. The post is still too shallow, or still rotten at the ground line, so it leans again in the next storm, and sometimes takes the post next to it along. Resetting it properly once usually costs less than propping it up again and again.

How to Get an Exact Repair Price

Photos from your phone help, but we'll come look at the damage in person before we give you a price. We check the broken parts, look at the posts on either side, and give you a free written estimate of your fence repair cost. If other posts are close to failing, we'll tell you. If a repair will do, we'll tell you that too.
