Repair or Replace? A Straight Answer
A leaning fence often looks worse than it is. If a few posts or pickets have given out and the rest of the fence is still solid, a repair is the right call, and that's what we'll recommend.
Sometimes the rot has worked its way through a lot of posts and rails. At that point, a new fence usually gives you a better value than paying for one patch after another. If that's where yours is, we'll show you what we found and explain why.
If you'd like to look for yourself first, our guide on whether to repair or replace an old fence walks through what to check, and the fence repair cost guide breaks prices down by job.
Gates and Iron Need Their Own Fixes
Gates get more use than any other part of a fence, so they tend to wear first. When a walk gate drags, it's usually a loose hinge post or a frame that's pulled out of square. Tightening the hinges helps for a while, but it won't hold for long.
We reset the hinge post, square the frame back up and add an anti-sag cable that pulls the low corner back where it belongs. For big driveway gates and gate openers, see our driveway and automatic gates page.
Wrought iron doesn't rot, but it can crack at the welds and rust where the paint has worn off. We grind the rust down to bare metal, weld the joint and repaint it with a rust-inhibiting paint. If you're thinking about iron for a new section, our wrought iron fences page has more on that.
After a wood repair, the new boards will look brighter than the old ones for a while. Staining the fence evens out the color, and our staining and sealing page explains how that works.

Why Fence Posts Fail in Boerne Ground
Around Boerne, the uplands are shallow, stony soil sitting on limestone. A post hole there often hits rock a foot or two down. If the original crew stopped where the rock started, the post was set too shallow, and wind load on a 6 ft privacy fence will work it loose sooner or later.
Down on the creek terraces the problem flips. The ground is loamy clay that swells when it's wet and shrinks when it dries, which pushes shallow posts out of line. Either way, the fix is the same: a replacement post set to the right depth, in a concrete footing, drilled into the rock when that's what's down there.

Fence Repair Questions, Answered
Can you replace just one post?
Yes. We pull the old post and footing, set a new one in concrete, and reattach the rails.
Can you fix a sagging or dragging gate?
Yes. Most sagging gates come from a loose hinge post or a frame that has racked out of square. We reset the hinge post, square the frame, add an anti-sag kit, or replace the gate if it's too far gone.
Do you repair wrought iron fences?
Yes. We repair cracked welds, straighten or replace bent pickets and rails, and repaint iron where rust has started at the welds.
Can you match my existing boards?
We match board size and style as closely as we can. New wood will look brighter than weathered boards at first; staining the repaired section, or the whole fence, evens it out.
Do you repair ranch and game fence out toward Sisterdale and Comfort?
Yes. We repair pipe, wire and game fence on acreage north and west of Boerne, including Sisterdale along FM 1376 and Comfort along I-10, where long runs cross stony uplands.
Do I need a permit to repair a fence in Boerne?
Inside Boerne city limits, the City of Boerne requires a permit application with a site plan for a fence. If you're replacing long runs rather than fixing a few parts, check with the city before work starts. Fair Oaks Ranch runs its own permits for new fences and additions.
